A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked the town of Gateshead in northeastern England.

Layton Carr, just 14 years old, was reported missing by his family last Friday. Days later, their worst fears were confirmed: Layton’s body was discovered inside a burned-out building in a run-down industrial area.

Now, in a shocking twist, fourteen children — aged just 11 to 14 — have been arrested in connection with his death.

Hangout spot
According to The Times, emergency services were called to a fire near the Fairfield Industrial Park in the Bill Quay area shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday. Once the flames were put out, police launched a desperate search for Layton, who was believed to have been in the area.

Tragically, a body — believed to be Layton’s — was found inside the building.

Police have now arrested eleven boys and three girls, all between the ages of 11 and 14, on suspicion of manslaughter, People reports.

All of them have since been released on police bail as investigations continue, according to The Northern Echo.

The industrial park where the fire occurred was known as a hangout spot for local teens, despite its deteriorating condition.

A kind and caring boy
Now, a heartbroken family and an entire community are in mourning.

Layton’s school released a touching statement calling him a “much-loved student” who will be deeply missed in the classroom and on the playground.

His family is remembering Layton as a “kind, caring, and loving boy,” in a heartfelt tribute shared by Northumbria Police on Monday, May 5.

“From the minute he was born, it was obvious the character he would turn out to be,” they said.

“Layton was your typical 14-year-old lad, a cheeky, happy lad. Despite his cheeky side, Layton had an absolute heart of gold and would do anything for anyone.

“He was loved by all that met him, and it showed. He was a family boy who loved his mam and sisters more than anything in the world.

“Layton, we love you more than any words can ever explain. You will be missed more than you’ll ever know. Our bright and beautiful boy.”

They added: “As a family, we would like to say a massive thank you to all who helped in finding Layton.

“A massive thank you to the police and all services involved. We’re incredibly grateful for the work that you do every day to bring closure to families like ours.”

A heartfelt plea
In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign has raised over £18,000 (about $24,000) to support Layton’s grieving mother.

This senseless loss has left an entire city in shock — and raised haunting questions about what really happened that day. As police continue to investigate, they’re urging anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins of Northumbria Police issued a heartfelt plea as the investigation continues, urging the public to respect the gravity of the situation.

“Our thoughts are very much with Layton’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” she said. “We have specialist officers supporting them, and we’ll continue to do everything we can.”

She also asked the public to avoid spreading speculation, especially on social media, warning that even a seemingly harmless post could interfere with the active investigation.

“Sharing harmful or misleading content online can be considered a criminal offense,” Jenkins added. “And we want to remind everyone—suspects, especially those under 18, are legally protected and cannot be named publicly.”

Rest in peace, Layton. You’ll never be forgotten.
