A few days later, while I was cooking for dinner, I heard Richard enter the house. He was talking to someone on the phone. Out of pure curiosity, I stopped to listen, and what I heard was like a cold shower: “Make sure Maria doesn’t find out,” he said, his voice deep.
“And I have to be careful with Jennifer. She could destr0y my plan.”
I felt my stomach clench. Did Jennifer have a reason? Is Richard hiding something serious? My mind raced, and disturbing scenarios were full of my imagination.

I took a deep breath and decided to oppose Richard. When he entered the kitchen, I told him everything I’d heard and confessed Jennifer’s concerning. He seemed astonished, then disappointed that I doubted him.

“I was planning a surprise birthday party for you, Maria,” he said with a rueful smile.

How could I have trusted him? Richard had always encouraged me, and I had let myself be carried away by my irrational fears.
A valuable lesson
The day of the party arrived, and it was a unexpected moment. Richard had set up a lavish event with our friends and family to celebrate this new milestone in our lives. Jennifer, though unsettled by all the excitement, ended up having fun and smiling.
Our daughter’s mistrust was simply a misunderstanding, and she would eventually feel safe and loved. This incident taught me that, even in times of uncertainty, love and trust must stay in our foundations.
