After a sudden health scare and decades at the helm of one of America’s favorite game shows, this legendary host made a life-changing decision. What happened behind the scenes, and what’s next for him?

For over four decades, this legendary host was a nightly fixture in American homes. He guided contestants through puzzles and prizes on “Wheel of Fortune.” As his 78th birthday approaches, he’s stepping into a new chapter, having recently retired from the show that made him a household name.

Though his decision to step down came years after a sudden health crisis in 2019, his farewell is a reflection of a long and storied career. Now, fans are left to wonder what’s next for the beloved host as he looks forward to life beyond the game show.

The Emergency Surgery That Could Have Ended His Career
In November 2019, the beloved TV host faced a terrifying health crisis. After returning home from his usual morning walk with his daughter, Maggie, he was suddenly hit with intense stomach pain. “I didn’t know what it was,” he later recalled, “but within two and a half hours, I was in surgery.”

The source of the pain was a blocked intestine, and his condition rapidly worsened. His blood pressure dropped dramatically, and doctors informed him that immediate surgery was necessary to save his life. The pain was unbearable, leaving him curled up in the fetal position on his bed, unresponsive to any pain medications.

Describing the ordeal, he said, “They tried various drugs, but none of them worked until they gave me something that made me see beautiful pastels and lovely faces. After that, I wasn’t thinking about the pain anymore.”

The surgery was a success, but the incident served as a stark reminder of how quickly things can change. Despite the gravity of the situation, the host made a swift recovery and returned to work not long after.

His Decision to Leave ‘Wheel of Fortune’ After 40 Years
For decades, he was the face of “Wheel of Fortune,” a staple in American households since its first season in 1981. However, in June 2023, the legendary host announced his decision to retire after the show’s 41st season. Fans were shocked, but he revealed that the decision had been on his mind for some time.

In his announcement on Twitter, he wrote, “Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It’s been a wonderful ride, and I’ll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all.” While his message was lighthearted, it marked the end of an era for television.

He later explained that while he could have continued hosting, it was important for him to step away while still at the top of his game. “I’d rather leave a couple of years too early than a couple of years too late,” he remarked.

After more than four decades on the show, he felt it was the right time to retire and focus on other aspects of life. Although his health scare in 2019 was a significant moment, his retirement decision wasn’t about his health—it was simply time for him to move on after an incredible run.

A Bittersweet Goodbye to the Show
On June 7, 2024, the legendary host filmed his final episode of “Wheel of Fortune,” marking the end of an incredible 40-year journey. The farewell episode was filled with emotion and nostalgia, as the show paid tribute to his remarkable career with a montage playing in the background. It highlighted key moments from his time on the show.

During his final speech, he expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to be part of viewers’ lives for so many years. “It’s been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade,” he said.

He also emphasized how “Wheel of Fortune” had become more than just a game show. It was a place where families could come together, children could learn their letters, and people from different cultures could practice English.

One of the most touching moments of his farewell was when he acknowledged his longtime co-host, Vanna White. “Vanna is as sweet and unassuming as she seems. We’ve seen a lot of changes in each other’s lives over the years, but we’ve always been there for each other,” he stated.

He noted that, although their professional partnership had ended, they would remain close friends, as they lived only five miles apart. His final words to the audience were heartfelt, “Thank you all so very much. And goodbye.”

It was a moment that felt like the closing of a chapter, not just for him, but for the millions of fans who had watched him over the years.

This stage production will reunite him with his longtime friend, Joe Moore, and take place at the Hawaii Theatre Center, with all proceeds benefiting the venue. The play offers fans a chance to see a different side of the former “Wheel of Fortune” host, who will portray a brilliant psychiatrist caught in a web of intrigue.

It’s a role that allows him to showcase his acting abilities, a nod to the early days of his career when he appeared in shows like “The A-Team” and “Airplane II: The Sequel.” Despite his plans to take on this new challenge, the host has made it clear that he’s also looking forward to some quieter moments in life.

He’s hinted that he’ll spend more time on hobbies and family. As he put it, “I’m perfectly happy if it just means that I’ll continue with my crossword puzzles and play with grandchildren.”

While he hasn’t ruled out future projects, he’s content with whatever comes next. “For me to do anything else, it would have to be something special, geared to me, designed for me. Something exciting and different and challenging,” he added.

For now, he seems happy to enjoy this new chapter in life, with both personal and professional opportunities awaiting. As Sajak steps into his 78th year, he leaves behind a legacy that few can match.

Fans have showered him with praise, calling him a “fantastic host” and expressing their gratitude for his years of dedication to the show. Comments like, “Wow, what a legendary man,” and “Absolute legend, happy retirement,” reflect the deep affection viewers have for him.
