The queen of rom-coms is finally back

Cameron Diaz recently made her big movie return after an 11-year Hollywood hiatus.

Yep, the queen is back. The actor has made a U-turn on her ‘retirement’ in the form of playing a former CIA spy alongside Jamie Foxx in Netflix’s Back in Action.

That film title does seem pretty apt, right?

Diaz had her big break way back in 1994 with her iconic performance in The Mask. She then of course went on to appear in the likes of The Holiday, Charlie’s Angels, The Other Woman, Bad Teacher and Knight and Day.

And while there’s the sprinkling of other genres in there, she pretty much solidified herself as a rom-com favourite. But just days after this big return, the 52-year-old has made a bit of a career announcement – one not everyone may be too pleased by.

Sure, Back in Action may have flopped with critics (it’s sitting at just 25 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) but Diaz seems committed to a change in tactics.

Appearing on Capital Breakfast with Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby, she admitted: “I’ve left my ‘rom-com’ era.”

Instead, the star has decided she’s in her ‘mom-com’ era.

She made a similar comment during an interview with Empire where she said: “No more rom-coms, only mom-coms.”

Diaz didn’t quite go into detail about what she means by this, but we can just assume she’d rather appear in comedy films as a mum nowadays, rather than as the romantic lead.

That’s if she will appear in any other films anyway as she spoke about whether or not she’s making a permanent return: “I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say.

“If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to.

“I’m not defining anything. I’m just open to whatever makes sense for me and my family at any given moment.”

Either way, she’s set to return to her role of Princess Fiona in Shrek 5 which was recently delayed to December 2026.

While Back in Action may have panned, Diaz has still been widely praised as people are buzzing to see her back on screens.

Newsday said: “Diaz’s return is welcome, but she needs a better project.”

And We Live in Entertainment echoed: “For what it’s worth, Diaz has lost none of the charm she tends to bring to these types of roles, and she and Foxx have good chemistry. It just doesn’t amount to a lot, making me wonder if there’s something better to see these two back in action with.”

Back in Action is available to stream on Netflix now.
