‘Dallas’ Star Priscilla Pointer, Mother of Actress Amy Irving, Dies at Age 100

Actress Priscilla Pointer, who appeared in Dallas and the horror film Carrie, died at the age of 100.

The news was shared in an Instagram post from her daughter, fellow actress Amy Irving, on Tuesday, April 29. Irving’s announcement confirmed that her mother passed away one day prior.

“Priscilla Pointer, May 18th, 1924-April 28th, 2025,” Irving, 71, wrote via the social media platform. “Priscilla Pointer, acclaimed stage television and film actress, and mother of David, Katie, and Amy Irving, died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 100, hopefully to run off with her 2 adoring husbands and her many dogs. She most definitely will be missed.”

Irving’s post featured a carousel of images that captured Pointer as a child, through her younger years and into her later years. Family members were also seen in the touching tribute.

Pointer’s son, USC professor David K. Irving, told USA Today on Tuesday that his mother died of natural causes in “an assisted-living facility” in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

The actress served as one of the oldest-living cast members of Dallas, per the Dallas Fanzine Facebook page, portraying Rebecca Barnes Wentworth in the series, which aired on CBS from 1978 to 1991. Rebecca was the mother of Victoria Principal’s character on the beloved TV series.

Principal, 75, took to Instagram on Tuesday to pay tribute to her former Dallas costar. “Priscilla Pointer, my favorite TV mama & a wonderful woman, passed away today. My sincere condolences to Amy Irving & all of Priscilla’s family. Always a special place in my heart. RIP ❤️🕊️,” she captioned a throwback photo of her former colleague.

Pointer also starred in 1976’s Carrie alongside Irving, playing her daughter’s mother in the classic film. The pair appeared in seven films together in total, per Variety.

The outlet also noted that Pointer portrayed several “famous mothers” in the 1970s and 1980s, including mom to Diane Keaton’s character in 1977’s Looking For Mr. Goodbar, Sean Penn’s character in 1985’s The Falcon and the Snowman, and Kyle MacLachlan’s character in 1986’s Blue Velvet.

Other film credits included appearances in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Twilight Zone: The Movie, while TV credits spanned ER, Touched by an Angel, Judging Amy and Cold Case.

Born in New York City, she was also a stage actress throughout the 1950s, appearing in the first national tour of A Streetcar Named Desire, per Extra, and the 1973 Broadway revival of the acclaimed play.

Pointer is survived by her three children.
